Whenever I’m asked to put together a recommended reading list for quality assurance professionals the first thing that comes to mind is Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. It’s not the most instructive book, but the philosophical underpinnings of the work discussing the nature of “arete” and whether Truth and Quality are or should be considered separate things really gets to the core of what we do. In any case it is an accessible and surprising narrative enjoyable for anyone and worthwhile for making one think about the difference between a hobby and a chore. Don’t expect it to be of use adjusting your carburetors though… it’s not a shop manual.
